The county name was first used in 1011 as Bedanfordscir, meaning the shire or Bedford (which translates as river crossing). The population of Bedfordshire is approximately 590,000 and it covers an area of 477 square miles, making it 41st in England in terms of size. Bedford is the county town and was formerly a market town for the wider agricultural area from the Middle Ages onwards. During this time wool was the region’s principal industry, moving on to lace in the 1560s through to the 20th century. During the 19th century the area became a centre for the engineering industry.

The county has a good transport network and is linked by rail and road to London, the Midlands and the North of England. London Luton airport provides flights to all parts of the UK and Europe among other destinations.

There are a number of choices to make when selecting a Bedfordshire holiday cottage, for example whether to say in one of the county's delightful towns and villages or whether to base yourself in a more rural location. The cottages all provide home comforts and modern facilities ensuring your arrival is welcoming and your stay is comfortable.

The range of holiday cottages in Bedfordshire is extensive, from one and two bedroom properties suitable for couples and small families, to those with 3 or more bedrooms for a greater number of guests. Some of the cottages have extensive gardens and many are happy to welcome pets.

The county is full of interesting attractions for the visitor and staying in a featured Bedfordshire holiday cottage affords you the ideal base from which to make the most of the sights.

Bedford itself has a wealth of history and many buildings of architectural interest, such as St Paul's church in the town centre which dates back to the early 13th century.
